I had the privilege today of addressing participants at the University of Beninโs Web3 Programme on the theme: โNigeriaโs Artificial Intelligence Industry โ The Speed, Growth, and What Comes Next.โย Engaging with a community deeply committed to decentralization made the dialogue both timely and strategically important.

The Past -ย An Aspirational Foundation
Our early AI efforts were driven by academia and isolated industry use cases. Progress was slow, constrained by limited datasets, insufficient compute power, and a small technical workforce. Yet this period established the intellectual groundwork for what followed.
The Present - A Period of Exponential Advancement
Nigeria is now experiencing a rapid and transformative AI surge. FinTech institutions are deploying advanced models for fraud detection and credit scoring. HealthTech innovators are leveraging AI for genomics and clinical intelligence. AgriTech solutions are empowering farmers with real-time diagnostics and market prediction tools. Most critical is the strengthening of our talent pipeline, supported by initiatives such as Data Science Nigeria and global strategic investments.
The Future ย -ย The Convergence Era
The next decade will be defined by the fusion of AI and Web3. As AI faces increasing scrutiny around trust, transparency, data ownership, and governance, Web3 presents the architectural pathways to resolve these challenges. Decentralized data markets, verifiable AI decision layers, DAO-driven governance structures, and distributed compute networks will underpin the next wave of innovation. Nigeriaโs National AI Strategy provides a national framework, but the builders of this future will be the developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs working at this intersection.
My message to participants was unequivocal: Nigeriaโs next major technological leap will not emerge from AI alone, nor Web3 in isolation, but from their convergence.ย The opportunities ahead are significant for those who position themselves at this crossroads.
