𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
Palm oil production remains a major source of income for countless women across South East Nigeria. For many rural families, it is the backbone of their livelihood and a vital part of local economic activity. Yet, despite its importance, one persistent challenge continues to undermine productivity and income generation—the lack of an efficient mechanism for cutting ripe palm fruits.
Traditionally, this work has been done by young men skilled in climbing and harvesting. However, finding people willing to engage in this job today has become increasingly difficult. Many prefer the allure of “yahoo yahoo,” quick-money ventures, or more stable opportunities such as construction work—what is popularly referred to as “shaving messy,” which pays significantly more than what is earned from cutting palm fruits.
From personal experience, this challenge is more than theoretical. For over six months, I have been searching for anyone—at any reasonable cost—who can help harvest the ripe fruits on my palm farm. Unfortunately, no one has been available. The result? Ripe palm fruits wasted, productivity lost, and income opportunities diminished. At this point, all I seek is someone who can simply clear out the wasted fruits to allow the new cycle of growth.
This issue is bigger than one farm. It reflects a growing gap in traditional agricultural labour and highlights why mechanized agro-solutions are urgently needed. We cannot continue relying solely on manual harvesting methods in a sector so central to rural economic development.
I am calling on innovators, mechanized agro companies, agricultural engineers, and policymakers to pay attention to this gap. We need practical, affordable, and accessible mechanized tools or systems that can support palm fruit harvesting—especially for women and smallholder farmers who form the backbone of this industry.
If we truly want to empower rural communities, boost production, and reduce waste, addressing this labour shortage through technology is the way forward.
