India’s agriculture stands at a unique crossroad—a powerhouse of production facing deep structural challenges.
Despite being the world’s second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables (with ~112.6 million tonnes of fruits and ~204.9 million tonnes of vegetables in FY24), we see a growing trend of leading agritech startups shutting down, from BharatAgri to Otipy and Fraazo.
*Why are such paradoxes surfacing*?
Production Prosperity: Our increasing yields do not always convert to improved livelihoods for the 86% of small and marginal farmers. Fragmented landholdings, low resource use efficiency, and price instability persist. Farm-level adoption of improved tech and practices is slow, despite research advances.
The Post-Harvest Bottleneck: A significant portion of scientific gains is lost between harvest and market. Weak cold chains, multiple intermediaries, and limited infrastructure mean both quality and profits suffer—a challenge even advanced genetics or precision tools cannot solve in isolation.
Tech, Policy & Field Gaps: Most agritech solutions prioritize scale and rapid growth for investors, often misaligned with local realities—low digital literacy, credit risk, and highly variable microclimates. Policy frameworks may incentivize production, but less so for value-addition, traceability, or true sustainability.
A Need for Integrated Thinking: The sector needs models that unite genetics, agronomy, soil health, water management, mechanization, and real-world market access. Our research must inform not only what happens in the field, but what reaches the consumer—requiring collaboration among public research, startups, FPOs, and agri-policy experts.
Moving forward, it’s essential to move beyond “technology for the sake of technology.”
Instead, let’s design and implement pragmatic, adaptive, and context-driven solutions—with research deeply rooted in farmer realities, robust extension systems, and genuine partnerships.
India’s agricultural future will be built not just on new varieties or digital apps, but on integrated, inclusive systems where every link—from genetics to markets—works for the actual practitioners: our farmers.
