Just concluded the Board of Directors meeting of the World Vegetable Center in Taiwan â and Iâm leaving deeply inspired.
Walking through the gene bank, the new research building, and the pepper speed-breeding facilities, I felt genuinely proud of the work the Center is doing to enhance vegetable production and consumption. Seeing firsthand the science behind developing seeds with the right traits, resistances, and stress tolerances was eye-opening. As farmers, we often focus on the outcomes we want, without fully appreciating the years of research, the trade-offs, and the resources required to balance so many competing priorities in seed development.
This visit made me even more grateful. Every time I eat vegetables, Iâll now be thinking about the layers of innovation, patience, and dedication behind every seed.
Iâm excited â and cheering loudly â as WorldVeg pushes forward with its 2026â2033 Global Strategy to deliver science and innovation for enhanced vegetable production and consumption as it envisions a future where diverse, safe and nutritious vegetables are at the heart of healthier lives, more resilient communities and sustainable food systems.
A bonus highlight was touring Symon Agricultural Biotech in Tainan, where smart agriculture, automation, and vertical farming come together to produce stunning orchids. A powerful reminder of what becomes possible when agriculture and technology truly meet.
