On enchaĂźne.

Day + 1 from the Indonesian Food Resilience Forum, organized by Andy Zain Rama Mamuaya, Andreas Surya, and Foundry Collective. A big success to you and your team! I wrote a few weeks ago with ANGIN that agritech is not dead. Deals are still happening. Conversations behind closed doors are often optimistic. Capital is gradually coming back. Even the strong attendance at this event was a sign of renewed belief. What we heard during this event: - Indonesia’s agriculture stands at a crossroads. - We cannot rely on traditional approaches while expecting competitiveness and climate resilience. - Technology is no longer optional. It determines who wins. - Artificial intelligence, IoT, and digital solutions are already proving their value. Precision tools are cutting fertilizer use, boosting yields, and improving climate risk management. Evidence is not the barrier anymore. Adoption is. - Despite agriculture contributing 14 percent of GDP, only 1 to 3 percent of private investment flows into the sector. Perceived risk keeps capital on the sidelines while farmers absorb the volatility themselves. This mismatch must change. - Food sovereignty and national competitiveness require a systemic shift: - Superior seeds that withstand climate shocks. - Data infrastructure that enables real market intelligence. - Downstream processing that retains value in Indonesia vs export away - Financing that shares risk fairly. - Skills development that elevates young agripreneurs. - Collaboration is the lever that unlocks this transformation: Government can enable. Industry can innovate. Academia can build talent. When these forces align, productivity rises and social equity advances. - Indonesia is not short of innovators. It is time to back them. The opportunity is larger than modernizing farms. It is redefining agriculture as a driver of prosperity, dignity, and national growth. The future will not be shaped by weather alone. It will be shaped by a willingness to invest, adopt technology, partner, and lead with confidence. Agritech/Innovation is well alive. Now it needs conviction. And a big thanks to the fellow speakers of my session Alan Johnson from the IFC - International Finance Corporation John Friedman from AgFunder Bambang Cahyo Susilo from Eratani and of course, my former colleague Hyacynthia Kesuma from Rabo Foundation

Growing up, I saw farming as “the poor man’s job”, unattractive, exhausting, and meant only for the uneducated. Many of us carried this mindset, and honestly, it made sense at the time. Farming relied heavily on human effort, with little exposure to tools like tractors, planters, harvesters, irrigation systems, or greenhouses. No modern farms. No modern narratives. But today, the story has changed. Agriculture has become green gold. Technology, innovation, and young minds are redefining what it means to farm, that’s from precision agriculture to automated systems and climate-smart practices. This Farmers’ Day, I’m reminded that not everyone will become a farmer, but everyone can contribute by investing, advocating, collaborating, or supporting efforts that make farming sustainable and profitable. To all farmers we honour you. Happy Farmers’ Day! UG Nkabom Nkabom Collaborative Defarmercist Alex Afari Richmond Aryeetey
