An Indian built a company to fix rice farming and the methane it pumps into the sky. He built it for Vietnam. And Indonesia. Not for India. Not yet. Dhruv Sawhney is from Bengaluru. His company, Rize, just raised 31 million dollars. Temasek put money in. So did the Rockefeller Foundation, and Bill Gates's Breakthrough Energy Ventures. What does it do? It works with small rice farmers to grow the crop with less water and far less methane, the gas that flooded paddy fields release into the air. It already works with 17,000 farmers across 50,000 hectares. None of them are Indian. Read that again. India grows more rice than almost anyone. Our paddy fields are one of the planet's biggest methane sources. The problem is screaming in our own backyard. And an Indian founder went to Vietnam to solve it first. I am not angry at him. The capital was there, the pilots were faster, the door was open. I am asking why the door was easier to open somewhere else. The good news buried in this: he says India is next, southern rice farmers, within a couple of years.
