This principle guided DeepLeaf's week in Lagos with the UNDP AI Hub for Sustainable Development, held alongside Deep Learning Indaba 2026. Nigeria is home to more than 45 million farmers, making it one of the most instructive markets in the world for anyone building agricultural AI at scale. Over seven days, El Mahdi Aboulmanadel and Davide Menguzzato met with the institutions and organizations shaping the sector on the ground: Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security; H.E. Roberto Mengoni, Ambassador of Italy to Nigeria; the Eko Farmers APPEALS Cooperative Society; All Farmers Association Of Nigeria AFAN; Bola Oyeleke of TOPAN the Tomatoes and Orchard Producers Association of Nigeria ; Dolapo Olusanmokun of Mercy Corps AgriFin; and several others. During the same week, DeepLeaf convened AI Diffusion Pathways for Agriculture, a dinner near Pan-Atlantic University that brought together more than 30 stakeholders from across the value chain: farmers, cooperatives, aggregators, input companies, banks, insurers, and philanthropic and institutional partners, all at a single table. This exchange reflects DeepLeaf's approach to agricultural diffusion: convening every actor in the sector for a shared conversation and listening carefully to their perspectives. Today was all about laying the groundwork before writing a single line of code. ๐Ÿง  Spent time defining the problem clearly :-ย  Working through the idea, the architecture, and the "why" behind each design choice with AI as a thinking partner (shoutout to Claude for being a solid sounding board for this). ๐Ÿ” Did a deep dive into the existing landscape :- Researching similar tools and projects already out there, understanding what's been done, and figuring out where I could differentiate.ย  Turns out most "ask your data" style tools either use generic/toy datasets or aren't India-specific โ€” that's the gap I can fill with real, live mandi data. The biggest lesson from Day 1: a few hours of research and scoping before touching code saves you from rebuilding your architecture three weeks in. Delighted to share that our paper, "Phenology-Aware Conformal Uncertainty for Transformer-Based Satellite Image Time-Series Segmentation of Agricultural Parcels," has been accepted as a poster at the inaugural IEEE Asia-Pacific Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (AP-GARSS 2026), Qingdao, China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ, 11โ€“14 October 2026, under IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). We pair conformal prediction with crop-phenology constraints on Sentinel-2 time series to obtain distribution-free, parcel-level prediction sets at approximately 90% coverage, with average set size reduced by over 10%. A difficulty-grouped calibration scheme further preserves fair coverage across imbalanced crop classes. We also report what did not work. None of the four auxiliary signals tested (phenology residuals, spatial consistency, radar second opinions, and explanation faithfulness) outperformed the model's own calibrated confidence at detecting errors. Reporting that negative result mattered to us as much as reporting the positive ones.
