Agritech India, 2025: at least five funded companies shut. BharatAgri , Deep Rooted , ReshaMandi. Sentiment on "feeding a billion": 10/10. The economics of the farm gate: 3/10. Here's why. Funding first. 2021: $1.17 billion. 2022: $802 million. 2023: $178 million. Down 78%. 2025: $182 million. A decade of capital. Zero unicorns. Now the number nobody puts in the pitch deck. RBI working paper, October 2024, farmer's share of the consumer rupee: Tomato: 33%. Onion: 36%. Potato: 37%. Dairy: around 70%. The farmer grows the tomato and keeps a third. The dairy farmer keeps two-thirds. Same country. Same roads. Same middlemen. That gap is the entire agritech opportunity, and almost nobody built for it. What got built instead: advisory apps, input e-commerce, farm-to-fork delivery in metros. All of it priced the farmer as a user to acquire. None of it priced the farmer as a supplier to pay. BharatAgri's own numbers: revenue up 78% to Rs 4.8 crore in FY24. Loss Rs 22 crore. Positive unit economics, the founder said. Investors said the market was not big enough. The market was not big enough because the product was the app. The market is the 63 paise. First principles. Strip everything away and agriculture is one thing: a perishable good moves from a person with no storage to a person with no patience. Every rupee in the chain is a price for time and spoilage. Whoever removes the most spoilage keeps the most margin. Dairy proved this. Amul did not build an app for farmers. It built cold chain, daily pickup, and a payment every ten days. Distribution was the moat. 70% followed. 3 fixes that would actually work: โ€ข Build for the 63 paise, not the 33. Own aggregation, grading, and cold storage at the mandi, not advisory on the phone. The margin is in the middle. Go stand in the middle. โ€ข Pay the farmer in 48 hours, every time. A farmer who is paid in two days sells to you first. That is the cheapest customer acquisition in the country and no app has ever matched it. โ€ข Underwrite spoilage, not software. Capital should fund cold rooms and reefer trucks with a ten-year life, not user growth with a ten-week half-life. This is infrastructure returns. Price it that way. The tech was world-class. The farm gate was never built. The next agritech unicorn will look boring. It will look like a warehouse. Facts from public filings. Not investment advice. #Agritech #Farmers #StartupIndia #SupplyChain #FirstPrinciples #ColdChain #VCInsightsByAmit

Unlocking India's Agro-Waste Goldmine: From Residue to Revenue India generates vast amounts of agricultural waste each year, presenting a monumental opportunity for sustainable economic growth and environmental stewardship. Often treated as farm surplus or burnt seasonal stubble, this massive volume of biomass carries immense potential to drive the countryโ€™s clean energy transition. By accelerating "Waste to Wealth" initiativesโ€”such as bio-energy generation, compressed biogas (CBG) production, and organic compostingโ€”India can significantly curb greenhouse emissions, improve soil fertility, and generate green jobs across rural communities. Converting agricultural residues into valuable resources marks a crucial step toward building a truly circular economy and securing a resilient, climate-positive agricultural future. ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒพโšก #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #WasteToWealth #AgriTech #RenewableEnergy #CleanEnergy #Bioenergy #GreenIndia #SustainableAgriculture #BioGas #EnvironmentalImpact #FarmersFirst #ClimateAction Sharath Chandra M Alungoor Vinay Skanda Pavithra K R Sharavathi Cr Dr. Raghu R S Pawan Kaushik

What if abandoned coal mines became farms? It sounds strange. But beneath Chinaโ€™s surface, an unexpected idea is taking shape: Turn abandoned coal mines into underground agricultural laboratories. China has more than 12,000 abandoned coal mines, and that number could reach around 15,000 by the end of this decade representing an estimated 7.2 billion cubic metres of unused underground space. Instead of leaving these workings as forgotten remnants of the coal era, researchers in Shanxi are asking a different question: Can a mine become part of the food system? At first, the challenges seem obvious. No sunlight. No rainfall. Limited natural ventilation. But underground environments offer something conventional agriculture increasingly struggles to control: Temperature, humidity, airflow, water, light and COโ‚‚ can potentially be engineered and monitored. Mine water contaminated with sulphates, metals and other substances could potentially be treated underground and reused for irrigation. The idea is still at the research and feasibility stage not a proven commercial farming solution. The mining industry has spent centuries learning how to extract value from underground spaces. A closed mine doesn't necessarily have to be the end of a story. Sometimes, it could be the beginning of another one. From coal mine to agricultural laboratory. From abandoned space to future resource. That is what circular thinking in mining can look like. ย  #Mining #CoalMining #MineClosure #MineReclamation #CircularEconomy #UndergroundMining #Agriculture #AgriTech #SustainableMining #Innovation #ClimateChange #FoodSecurity #Geology #MiningIndustry

Coffee exporters in Uganda buy from thousands of farmers. The records sit in spreadsheets, notebooks, and people's heads. Now the EU wants to know exactly which plot a bag of coffee came from, with GPS boundaries and documents to back it up. That gap is what I'm building Londoola for. Two parts: A mobile app for field agents. Register the farmer, walk around the farm to capture the boundary, attach photos and documents. Works fully offline and syncs when there's network. A web dashboard for the exporter. See how many farms are mapped, what data is missing and from whom, and trace an export lot back to the farms that contributed to it. I built a prototype and recorded a short walkthrough. Video below. If you work in coffee export, at a cooperative, or anywhere close to this problem, tell me what you think. #Coffee #EUDR #AgriTech #Africa #Tech

It felt welcoming to sit with you Thomas Scaria on this podcast and discuss resilience, and on what it really takes to build something that lasts. Because here's what I've learned: the right room changes everything. When you're surrounded by people who lead with integrity, the right connections find you โ€” the right funding, the right partners, the right path forward. That's the room I want to build with those leaders. If you're working on something that matters โ€” funding a project, scaling data analytics and stewardship models, advancing mining, biotech, HealthTech, or AI, equipping our farmers with the next generation of agricultural tools, standing up data centers, or strengthening our defence infrastructure โ€” you already know innovation in BC isn't just strong. It's ready. Ready for the right people. Ready for the right room. #dataanalytics #resilience #stewardship #innovation #HealthTech #AgriTech #datacenter #mining #leadership

Humanoid robotics is moving beyond factories and laboratories. Chinaโ€™s GEAIR 2.0 has been developed for crop breeding and greenhouse operations, using two robotic arms to perform delicate tasks such as tomato-flower pollination in under 10 seconds. The development highlights how embodied AI could increasingly be applied to precision agriculture and biological research.
