🌱 HYDROPONICS: MORE OUTPUT, LESS WATER — BUT WHAT ABOUT ROI?
Hydroponics is often presented as a way to produce more with less water. But higher output does not automatically mean higher ROI.
💧 70–90% LESS WATER IN NFT
A 2018 review reports that commercial Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) systems can achieve approximately 70–90% water savings compared with conventional cultivation.
⚠️ This figure is specific to commercial NFT systems—not every hydroponic system.
🥒 ~22× HIGHER PRODUCTION — ONE CASE STUDY
A 2024 cucumber study from Bahawalpur, Pakistan, using farm data collected in 2020, reported:
• 200,000 kg/acre — Hydroponic
• 9,000 kg/acre — Soil-based
That equals approximately 22× higher production per acre in this particular study.
⚠️ Study-specific result, not a universal yield advantage.
💰 HIGHER OUTPUT ≠ HIGHER ROI
The study reported mean ROI of:
• Progressive farming — 7.07
• Hydroponics — 1.40
• Soil-based — 1.18
Importantly, 7.07 belongs to the separate progressive-farming category—not soil-based farming.
The study also reported production costs of:
• ₹25.85 lakh/acre — Hydroponic
• ₹1.10 lakh/acre — Soil-based
📊 THE REALITY
Profitability depends on:
Crop choice + System design + Capital cost + Operating cost + Energy + Market price + Management
These water-efficiency and cucumber-economics figures come from separate studies and are study/system-specific.
🚀 AT FARMSPHERICA INNOVATIONS
We are exploring hydroponics alongside water-quality monitoring, IoT, smart sensing, controlled-environment agriculture and AI/data-driven agriculture to develop more resource-efficient and economically informed agricultural approaches.
The future is not simply soil vs. hydroponics. It is about choosing the right technology for the right crop, location, resources and business model.
🤝 CSR COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITY
We are open to collaborating with corporates, CSR foundations, NGOs, FPOs, research institutions and technology partners on:
💧 Water conservation
🌱 Sustainable agriculture
🌍 Climate resilience
👨🌾 Farmer empowerment
🚀 AgriTech innovation
Through CSR partnerships, we aim to co-create practical, measurable initiatives connecting technology with real agricultural and community needs.
