

How Earth Observation Tracks the Pulse of Rice Granaries : A Satellite Deep-Dive into Nellore's Rabi Season (2025–2026) 🌾
Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore District in Andhra Pradesh derives its name from "Nellu"—the local word for Paddy. Fed by the Penna River delta and an extensive canal infrastructure, Nellore is one of South India's vital rice bowls.
Using Google Earth Engine (GEE) and QGIS, I analyzed Sentinel-2 satellite imagery across 7 months (Oct 2025 – Apr 2026) to map crop health and temporal growth dynamics during the Rabi season.
Key Findings & Satellite Metrics :
1. Peak Canopy & Biomass (Jan–Feb 2026)
January 2026 marked peak crop vigor with a district mean NDVI of 0.525.
Dense crop coverage hit 649,620 Hectares (~1.60 Million Acres).
2. Harvest & Fallow Transition (Mar–Apr 2026)
By April 2026, harvesting reached completion, causing mean NDVI to drop to 0.355.
Fallow/bare land area increased to 347,128 Hectares (~857,770 Acres).
Color Map Interpretation-
🟢 Dark Green (NDVI > 0.45): Healthy, high-density paddy crop canopy.
🟡 Yellow/Light Green (NDVI 0.25–0.45): Early growth stages or post-harvest residue/sparse vegetation.
🔴 Red (NDVI < 0.25): Water bodies (Pulicat Lake, Penna River channel) and urban bare land
