A major maintenance project is underway at Vales Point Power Station in Mannering Park, New South Wales, where the UGL team is working to keep Unit 5 running safely and reliably for years to come.

The unit has been taken out of service for a planned outage, giving crews the chance to inspect and upgrade key parts of the power station. This includes work on the boiler and turbine, as well as fans, pumps, air heaters, piping, ducts, and other important components that help keep the unit operating efficiently.

Originally scheduled to begin in October, the outage started earlier than planned to allow even more work to be completed. At its busiest point, around 200 skilled workers are onsite.

“From day one of planning, we’ve worked side by side with Vales Point to ensure every decision delivers the best result for the plant,” shares Chris Oliver, UGL Services Manager.

This outage isn’t just about maintenance, it’s also about working smarter and safer.

Thermal metal spraying is being used to protect and extend the life of key components.
A boiler simulation container is helping train workers on techniques before they enter live work areas.
Special training systems and safety innovations are improving consistency and protection for everyone onsite.

“Our long history in the energy sector means we can respond quickly, bring in the right people, and deliver complex work safely,” explains Chris. “We’re proud to help keep essential power generation assets running and to support Australia’s transition to a cleaner energy future.”

By combining smart planning, strong partnerships, and innovation, UGL is ensuring the reliability of an essential energy asset and helping to keep the lights on for communities across the region.
